What type of graduate school experience did you have?

Question
I know that this question is quite broad in regards to what I am asking. I will be heading to graduate school in the fall for a program in Higher Education Administration and I am very much looking forward to it. I would just like to know from those who attended on-campus what type of experience you had. What type of graduate program did you enter in to ? How long did it take you to complete? Was it easier or harder than you expected? Did you have a lot of classroom discussions? Did you have decent experiences working with other classmates? Were your professors engaging and helpful in regards to the class?
Answer
I had a terrible graduate school experience. Maybe because I went into a history graduate program and I thought I would learn a lot about history. But it was nothing like that. It was very politcal. The professors who had tenure were not helpful. They all wanted to write books and articles and did not care how long or even if we ever finished our Masters degrees or PhDs. Not all of the professors were like that, but enough of them were like that. Enough of them to make for a miserable experience. And we had to go to these meetings all of the time where they would tell us that because we were graduating from a state university we would probably never get jobs because the only people getting jobs were from big schools like Yale and Harvard. As I said this may be major dependent because I talked to other students at other graduate schools in history and they said the same thing. But I have talked to people at smaller colleges who have had a good experience. So maybe the key to a good graduate school experience is going to a smaller school.
